All tea is produced from the Camellia Sinensis plant, but the difference is in the various methods of preparing and curing as well as different varieties of the same species of plant. Conditions prime for growing this plant are tropical and subtropical climates.
Oolong Tea is one of the most commonly served beverages in Chinese restaurants and has been used for thousands of years for its health benefits. It rests somewhere between green tea and black tea in oxidation which gives it some of the same characteristics of both in taste and health benefits but as a result of different processing methods its action changes.
It has been an accepted belief in Chinese culture that oolong tea is beneficial in weight loss and weight maintenance and many studies have been carried out with varying results and conclusions. Part of the debate is which tea is more effective in weight loss, green or oolong tea, and is not likely a debate for which there is a definitive conclusion because of all the variants involved. However there is some supporting evidence that oolong tea may be better for weight loss and the current trend is to use oolong tea weight loss methods but ultimately this does not really differ from any green tea weight loss methods.
Weight loss is achieved by 2 basic principles, by cutting down on calories or inhibiting their absorption, and by increasing the energy expended by the body thus burning calories. By increasing the EE (energy expenditure) you are increasing the rate at which your body metabolizes the nutrients including fats and carbohydrates.
Tea contains caffeine, and it is a recognized fact that caffeine creates EE and increases metabolism, and the subject of some studies was whether it was the caffeine that was solely responsible for oolong tea’s weight loss capabilities or if there were other compounds at work. Data from one study confirmed that those drinking full strength oolong tea burned more calories than those drinking caffeinated water suggesting strongly there is another compound in the oolong responsible for the weight loss.
Other studies have shown that drinking tea before exercising can increase the energy expended during exercise significantly for up to 120 minutes. The compound found to be responsible for the weight loss and which is higher in oolong tea is Polymerized Polyphenols.
It is also supposed that oolong tea blocks the absorption of fats and carbohydrates reducing calories absorbed.
The potential for oolong tea weight loss, together with a healthy diet and regular exercise regiment can only mean a successful weight loss program. Drink a couple of cups of hot or cold oolong tea each day before a walk or exercise program and you will see results as well as reap the other health benefits associated with a green tea diet.
