Most of us today pop a pill for vitamins and supplements that we fail to get on our platter. And we’re unsure if these supplements are needed at all. You work fine, you eat well and you don’t feel sick, then why would you need vitamins and mineral supplements? Vitamins and minerals sadly are associated to medications the physician gave in only when we fell sick, whereas the true benefit of the magic pill is to bring wellness and health stability.


You may feel the fittest but that need not imply that you don’t need supplements. These are not just for the athletes and the geeks, vitamins are for every one of us. In our mad rush throughout the day, multitasking in every aspect and binging into what you find, supplements give your body a suitable quantity of nutrients every single day.


Dieticians say a human body needs an intake of 1600 calories per day. But vegetarians or people with eating disorders, pregnant women or the ones with busy and hectic lifestyles often fail to have such an ideal intake. In the literal sense, “supplement” is something additional. So, the intake of vitamins and mineral supplements are only to “add” to a basic healthy diet and lifestyle, or to a prescribed medication and therapy.

  2. Look for the disclaimers as certain dietary supplement labels are not approved by the FDA. The disclaimer should read in the lines that states the nutritional supplement is not intended to “diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.”
  3. Watch out for the Daily Value (DV). It describes the recommended daily intake of that particular nutritional supplement.
  4. Never miss looking for warnings on the bottle, and reading about ingredients.

Remember, it is solely up to you as the consumer to protect your health. The trick is to follow caveat emptor (“let the buyer beware”), and always let your health care professional have the last word on your dietary supplements.
