Does Green Tea Have Benefits For Health?

It’s difficult to dispute over 4,000 years of history of how vital green tea has been to the Asian medicinal culture. Green tea originated in China more than 4,000 years ago and has been used from that time on in traditional Chinese Herbal remedies. Even then they recognized its ability to aid in the digestive system.

Recently, green tea weight loss has been gaining recognition through studies done at universities and positive feedback. Together with a healthy weight loss program or change in eating habits, and an increase in activity, whether it’s an exercise regime or simply added daily walks, green tea can increase your ability to burn those calories so necessary for weight loss. One of the green tea benefits is that it contains a powerful antioxidant called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) which has been found to enhance metabolism, leading to promotion of weight loss. In a process called thermogenesis, EGCG activates the Central Nervous system into releasing fat cells into the blood stream where it is burned off as fuel. And although we know caffeine can produce the same results, studies have shown that the combination of the caffeine and the additional properties of green tea is more effective in enhancing this metabolism rate.

Green tea also aids in burning fat by activating the enzymes responsible for dissolving triglycerides. Triglycerides are used by our body for energy, but when the amount of these in our system is proportionately higher than those burned off, they turn to fat. By stimulating the enzymes into dissolving the excess triglycerides, we avoid this process thereby aiding in preventing obesity.

They found that fat oxidation rates in those consuming the green tea were 17% higher than those with the placebo and while adding a moderately intensive exercise regime, they found the fat oxidation contributed to total energy expended at a similarly significant higher rate. In other words if you did an hour of exercise, you would expend 17% more energy if you had consumed green tea prior to it.

Another study at Queen Margaret University in Edinburg studied the short term effects of green tea on students who were asked to not change their diets, but to add 4 cups of green tea per day. Among other health benefits noted, there was also a reduction of body fat and body weight.

So armed with this information, we can conclude that this is a healthy and productive weight loss system when integrated with healthy lifestyle choices. As with anything else, simply adding green tea to your diet is not going to make a significant difference. That being said and taking into account the many other health benefits of drinking green tea, if by drinking green tea you feel healthier, weight loss may follow as a result. Healthier individuals tend to have a more positive outlook on life which in turn enhances our ability to make better and wiser choices.
