Obesity and obesity-related conditions are major health problems. Several things contribute to this growing problem, and one of them is the ingestion of too much fructose.

Fructose

Fructose is a simple sugar which comes from fruits, honey, flowers, root vegetables, and berries. Fructose is available to consumers in crystalline form, in high-fructose corn syrup, and in sucrose, or table sugar.

When you eat foods with carbohydrates in them, the body breaks them down into glucose, which is used by our cells for energy. Glucose combines with insulin, and together they nourish the cells. Extra glucose is stored in the liver and can be reabsorbed by the body when the glucose blood levels drop.

Harmful Effects of Fructose

Too much fructose will stimulate fat production. Over time, you may develop non-alcoholic fatty liver disease because of this. This can cause damage much like the intake of too much alcohol.

Another bad thing fructose does is raise the levels of uric acid. If uric acid crystals congregate in your joints, they can cause gout. Uric acid also raises blood pressure because it inhibits nitric oxide, which lowers blood pressure.

Too much fructose can lead to high blood triglycerides, which are a major risk factor for heart disease. This occurs when fats are made from fructose because the body can’t process all of the sugar fast enough.

Fructose increases inflammation and this causes the insulin receptors to not work properly, so more insulin is sent into the body. Over time, the body becomes insulin resistant. When there is more glucose in the blood than in the cells, the result is diabetes.

Too much fructose also contributes to weight gain and obesity. It makes up half of sucrose and 55 percent of high-fructose corn syrup. Fructose also interferes with the hormones that regulate appetite, so you do not feel satisfied and eat more.

Better Nutrition

Since fructose in large amounts is harmful, it is best to have it in small quantities like in fruits or fruit juices. They are preferable to foods that only have empty calories with no nutrition. However, it is important to have these in moderation.

Monavie juices and energy blends are chock full of vitamins, phytonutrients, and antioxidants. They do not contain high-fructose corn syrup or artificial sweeteners. Monavie also has a weight management system with a shake mix, fruit bar, and supplements.

// ]]>

Rooibos is the South African name for “redbush” which is a member of the legume family of plants grown in South Africa. Rooibis tea is made from this particular plant and has been used in South Africa for many generations. This reddish brown tea has a malty and slightly grassy flavour, but has also been described as naturally sweet with a nutty flavour. It is traditionally drunk in its native South Africa with lemon and sugar or honey and as the green tea benefits and white tea benefits are becomming well known in our society, research is being done to discover the rooibos tea benefits so in this post we will share the currently known benefits. Keep in mind green tea has been researched a lot more since it’s very popular in Japan where a lot of research is constantly being done.

In spite of very few studies on humans of the health benefits of rooibos tea, it is becoming popular among western countries for its health benefits. Animal studies suggest a very high concentration of antioxidants as well as immune-modulating and chemopreventive effects. One extremely important rooibos tea benefit is its lack of adverse effects making it available to anyone.

There are 2 types of rooibos tea, reddish brown colored, which is prepared by oxidation, and green, which is unoxidized. However green rooibis production is far more demanding which makes it more expensive to buy, and so generally the reddish brown tea is the more common amongst rooibos tea drinkers but both kinds have the same health benefits.

The most notable rooibos tea health benefit is the high presence of antioxidants like aspalathin and nothofagin. Antioxidants attack free radicals which are toxic compounds responsible for much of our illnesses. The high level of antioxidants is due to the many important minerals in the tea.

We all are aware of how important iron is in transporting oxygen through our blood stream and into the cells of our bodies. Lack of iron causes fatigue and seriously low iron levels can create serious consequences. The iron in rooibos tea can help give your body the boost of iron it needs.

Calcium is vital to our bones and teeth to keep them strong and prevent osteoporosis and fractures.

The presence of zinc in rooibos tea may also be beneficial for warding off infections and to aid in body growth.

Other minerals present in rooibos tea are Magnesium, Potassium, Sodium and Flouride. The presence of all these minerals can only mean good things for rooibos tea drinkers and the fact it is all natural, caffeine free and there are virtually no side effects makes it even more appealing.

Some of the other noted rooibos tea health benefits are its contribution to a healthy heart by reducing cholesterol and helping to prevent blood clots, thus reducing the risk of heart disease. When substituted for regular tea, drinking rooibos tea thus reduces the intake of caffeine that can cause irritability, anxiety and insomnia. Tannins as well present in regular tea deplete iron in your system, and by substituting with rooibos tea, you avoid their negative effects. It has also been used for digestive disorders and allergies, and in traditional South African medicine for infantile colic, asthma and dermatological problems

Rooibos tea benefits along with its naturally sweet and malty flavor make it a wonderful alternative to other beverages and worth giving it a try.

Most of us today pop a pill for vitamins and supplements that we fail to get on our platter. And we’re unsure if these supplements are needed at all. You work fine, you eat well and you don’t feel sick, then why would you need vitamins and mineral supplements? Vitamins and minerals sadly are associated to medications the physician gave in only when we fell sick, whereas the true benefit of the magic pill is to bring wellness and health stability.

You may feel the fittest but that need not imply that you don’t need supplements. These are not just for the athletes and the geeks, vitamins are for every one of us. In our mad rush throughout the day, multitasking in every aspect and binging into what you find, supplements give your body a suitable quantity of nutrients every single day.

Dieticians say a human body needs an intake of 1600 calories per day. But vegetarians or people with eating disorders, pregnant women or the ones with busy and hectic lifestyles often fail to have such an ideal intake. There are many such people who fail to give what the body seeks, for many reasons.

So, what are supplements?

In the literal sense, “supplement” is something additional. So, the intake of vitamins and mineral supplements are only to “add” to a basic healthy diet and lifestyle, or to a prescribed medication and therapy.

Intake of vitamin and mineral supplements are possibly one of the most controversial issues under the healthy living scanner. While lack of vitamins can put your health into risk, too many can also be as big a threat. Hence, remember you can’t go crash dieting based on supplements and giving real food a miss. Also, these are expert pills, and are not over the counter medications; therefore, go according to what the doctor orders.

Why only safe options?

There is enough risk involved if you are jumping into the supplement bandwagon without consulting your health practitioner before taking any supplement. If you are pregnant, nursing a baby or have hypertension, diabetes or heart disease, you have to be cautious about your supplement.

So, how do I take the right supplements?

Here are a few most important requisites to select the right supplements:

Dietary supplement manufacturers need to meet the FDA’s Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for food.

Look for the disclaimers as certain dietary supplement labels are not approved by the FDA. The disclaimer should read in the lines that states the nutritional supplement is not intended to “diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.”

Watch out for the Daily Value (DV). It describes the recommended daily intake of that particular nutritional supplement.

Never miss looking for warnings on the bottle, and reading about ingredients.

Remember, it is solely up to you as the consumer to protect your health. The trick is to follow caveat emptor (“let the buyer beware”), and always let your health care professional have the last word on your dietary supplements.

// ]]>

A vacation is a time to relax and indulge. In a era where money is tight and a dollar doesn’t go as far as it used to, vacations are becoming fewer and further between for the typical American. When people are able to go on vacation they typically don’t want to be keeping track of things such as the amount of money they are spending or the amount of calories they are putting into their bodies. People often see a vacation as a time to cast reason and logic to the wind and indulge in food and drink, sometimes to regrettable extents. Fortunately, you can return home at same weight that you left if you have a simple game plan. Here are some easy tips to avoid bringing unwanted luggage home with you on your next getaway.

Drink Your Breakfast or Lunch

The majority of vacation destinations around the globe feature smoothies or fruit juices that are available within walking distance of your room. They are often healthy, tasty and are always an excellent way to literally drink in the vibe of your location. Getting your day stared with a dose of vitamins and fibers in local fruits and vegetables will get your metabolism going and provide you with a boost of energy. A light and healthy breakfast or lunch will also allow your body the chance to become hungry again toward the late afternoon, freeing up space in your stomach for a highly-anticipated and delicious dinner.

Utilize the Appetizers

Ordering food from appetizer or starter menus can be an excellent way to experience a variety of cuisine while keeping costs and the food portions low. Vacationers typically fall into bad habits when dining out while on vacation, often ordering extravagant and expensive platters with huge portions that are rarely finished. Taking leftovers back to a hotel room is not always an easy or even feasible endeavor. Splicing together a meal by eating various types of appetizers will also allow you to stop whenever you begin to feel full, as opposed to powering through a large plate of food in an attempt to get your money’s worth.

Walk As Much As Possible

Being on your feet and burning calories as often as possible is an excellent idea for vacationers, as it will keep the cost of transportation down and lessen the impact that the occasional delicious but fatty treats may have on your waistline. Walking will also allow you a better view and understanding of where the healthiest foods and restaurants are located. Open air farmers markets exist in nearly every civilized city in the world. Being on your feet will allow you to stroll through markets and stores without the hassles involved in parking an automobile.

Don’t Eat After 9pm

Avoiding food after nine o’clock at night is an especially wise move for vacationers. Extra pounds can be packed on quickly when desserts or room service is consumed in the wee hours. This can be especially tempting after an evening of cocktails at a bar or club, but should ultimately be resisted in light of the strain it puts on your digestive system, which often lasts well into the next day. Fruit bars and granola bars are good items to have around if the rule absolutely must be broken.

// ]]>

The Vitamin D benefits are widely known for its integral role in promoting skeletal health. While the importance of the D vitamin to the bones is undeniable it offers more than the promotion and regulation of calcium in the body. In recent studies, it showed that Vitamin D has cancer-fighting properties that may reduce risks of breast cancer, there were also research claiming that the sunshine vitamin can help address issues of depression. Unlike other types of supplements, the form most common in supplements which is Vitamin D3 does more than just helping the sick and diseased, several studies have suggested that the vitamin D3 benefits are also very important for bodybuilders.

Vitamin D, what’s in it for you?

It is an established fact that Vitamin D generates calcium absorption in the body thus creating a strong and healthy skeletal system. In addition, it also plays a pivotal role in having the muscles that can support the act of bodybuilding, in short Vitamin D benefits bodybuilders, weightlifters and other similar fitness enthusiasts.

A literature review conducted by Dr. Lisa Ceglia suggests that vitamin D supplements have a significant contribution to muscular strength as well as speed and the effect is even better when coupled with calcium. This study was published and in the Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care on November of 2010. It was also said that regular Vitamin D supplements improves fast-twitch muscle fibers. The fast-twitch muscle fiber plays an integral role for explosive movement, one very good example is weightlifting.

Talking Beyond Calcium

Everybody knows that without Vitamin D calcium absorption is impossible, what others may not know is that Phosporus absorption is also dependent on this vitamin. Calcium, aside from being responsible for bone health is also important for muscular contraction. It is very vital to have sufficient calcium deposit both in the bones and in the muscles since the bones support the muscle tissues and for the muscles to properly manage hard contractions. Some of the symptoms of vitamin d deficiency are insomnia, loss of apetite, visual problems and weight loss.

In another research, it was found out that Vitamin D later on converts into a steriod hormone. As such, it will have impact on strength. As the D vitamin is already in its active form, it binds certain kinds of receptors which are located in the membranes and nuclei of the muscle cells. And the moment these receptors are binded, it improves muscle contractions and most importantly, gives way to protein synthesis which builds up the muscles protein that promotes muscle growth. According to studies, certain types of receptors may be held responsible for greater muscle size and strength and normal levels of vitamin D will help keep your receptors active for maximum muscle function as well as strength and muscle growth.

Vitamin D is one of the few vitamins that you can get for free, a 15 to 20 minute sun exposure in the morning may be enough to give you the amount that you need for the day and avoid vitamin d deficiency symptoms. However, this vitamin is present in food and is always available in capsules as a medical supplement for convenience purposes.

Eating of fresh vegetables and fruit more often is the advice preferred to diabetic diagnosis patients. Although this is an age of organic eating this does not mean that the fresh fruits and vegetable in your eating schedule need to be organic. The variation in the blood sugar level is quite unpredictable in different diabetic patients. The food that are safe or causing minimum rise of blood sugar level in one patient might be sufficient to shoot up the sugar level which is dangerous in another person. It is better to follow doctor’s instruction than to risk.

Diabetes is a disease that can be controlled easily when you focus on it carefully. In some people is so difficult to control the craving. Fruits and vegetables are the best choice to such people who yearn for something sweet. We all know that a fruit contains sugar which is fructose but is better than one tea spoon full sugar of sucrose.
Fruits consume advantages which are numerous when to sweet who offers nothing expect rise in sugar and zero calories. Fruits are very important because they provide the patient with the much needed essential nutrients which the diabetic often lack. Because it is good to monitor the blood sugar level for each patient to determine their changes occurring in their blood sugar level before the permanent inclusion of fruit in their menu. The moderation consumption of selected fruits with the help advice by the physician will benefit and suppress their craving for sweet food.

Fruits are highly recommended by doctors for the diabetic patients, this because the form in which fruits are consumed also affects the blood sugar level. Fruits juice induce a rapid rise of blood level in which the rise of blood sugar level is not concern during slow eating of the recommended fruits. Fruits and vegetables add fiber content it is passed to the digestive system to aid in the digestion. Vegetables and fruits when added in daily menu for a diabetic it controls blood sugar level and also prevents the unpredictable variation in blood sugar level.

It is advised that you should avoid fruits juices especially in the concentration form. Fruits like apples, peaches, grapes fruits and Jamul can be safely included in the diet, but you should avoid fruits like banana, sugarcane, mango and watermelon among others to prevent high blood sugar level in the body.

A fruit such as apples contains pectin the element that lowers the insulin requirement of the person. Apple is a good source of vitamin B1and also is known for prevention of brain damage.
Blueberries health benefits seem too good to be true when you consider how yummy they are. In popularity for tastiness they rank second in consumption only to strawberries. But it is true. Blueberries have one of the highest concentrations of antioxidants in foods eaten in North America.

Antioxidants destroy free radicals which damage cellular structure. We’ve known this now for several years, but more research is being done regularly to discover new benefits of blueberries. And one of these wonderful new discoveries which will benefit many people is that freezing blueberries does not destroy their antioxidant properties. Another new discovery of benefits of blueberries is that in spite of their relatively higher Glycemic Index compared to other fruits, they still react positively on blood sugar regulation with persons with type 2 diabetes. Studies have also shown that organically grown blueberries are higher in many types of antioxidants present in blueberries than the commercially grown types.

Research has already uncovered blueberries health benefits for the nervous system and the brain, and now new research is showing that blueberries can improve memory as well. Researchers are hopeful that it may be revealed in more studies that one of the health benefits of blueberries may be to slow down or delay the onset of cognitive illnesses related to the aging process.

Blueberries are packed full of phytonutrients which act as both antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. Anthocyanins are the phytonutrients responsible for giving blueberries their wonderful blue color and are also responsible for many of the health benefits of blueberries. Research is now finding that these antioxidants are not only beneficial in their ability to strengthen the cardiovascular system, but literally every body system studied showed improvement with the consumption of blueberries. Some of these areas studied include damage to muscle tissue, protection of the nervous system, in older adults with neurodegenerative disease, in younger and middle aged obese adults, as a blood glucose level regulator and in protecting the digestive tract particularly against colon cancer.

One of the more commonly documented benefits of blueberries is in the cardiovascular system in numerous aspects of their action. Blueberries reduce triglycerides and LDL, the bad cholesterol, and improve the HDL, the good cholesterol. Blueberries protect the blood from oxygen damage which leads to clogging of the arteries. Blueberries protect the cells lining blood vessel walls. So you can see the multiple blueberry health benefits when it relates to the cardiovascular system.

Blueberries improve cognitive functioning. Research suggests that this could be a result of nerve cell protection from oxidation stress. There is well documented evidence of the health benefits of blueberries in relation to blood sugar regulation in persons with type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. Research consistently results in favourable impact.

The retina of the eye is particularly at risk for oxidation stress and blueberries have been shown to reduce this risk considerably with their antioxidant properties. During studies, one area which is now being studied is their ability also to protect the retina from damage from sunlight, thus protecting from cancer.

Ongoing studies are being conducted to determine the benefits of blueberries in relation to several different types of cancers, the plague of our times. At worst we can only improve our eating habits by eating better foods in the process.

Blueberries are packed with vitamins and minerals and you would be hard pressed to find anybody who doesn’t understand the importance of them in our daily regime. But rather than taking vitamin and mineral supplements why not consume them in the foods we eat daily. Blueberries contain the minerals calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, zinc, copper, iron, manganese and selenium and many of the vitamins our bodies require.
// ]]>

A final tip is if you want to take advantage of the blueberries health benefits that come with taking the many antioxidants that come with them, make sure to have WILD blueberries. By being farmed blueberries slowly lose some antioxidants since they are also used to repel intruders. So, if you want to take advantage of the anti aging benefits of blueberries make sure to get them wild!

Blueberries make everything better, and on a hot hot day, snack on a small bowl of frozen ones. Refreshing and definitely makes the hot days even better.

Red yeast rice is fermented rice with a bright reddish purple color. The color is a result of being cultivated with the moldMonascusPurpureus. The rice itself is used in cuisine mainly for its color, but it does have a mild pleasant taste. It is also used to color foods such as pickled tofu and red rice vinegar and is used in the production of Japanese Saki and Korean rice wine among other wines and foods such as PekingDuck.

Medicinally red yeast rice has also been used for thousands of years in Chinese Herbology and Traditional Chinese Medicine. It has been documented as far back as 800 ADused to revitalize and invigorate the body and blood and to aid in digestion.

Monacolins derived from Monascus were discovered in the 1970s to be identical to lovastatin, but lovastatin became the patented drug Mevacor, used to lower high cholesterol, and red yeast rice was marketed as a non-prescription dietary supplement. The use of it became an issue of contention with pharmaceutical companies who felt that as red rice yeast contained the equivalent of lovastatin, that people using any natural supplementwould not be monitoring any red rice yeast side effects and therefore could be dangerous.

Lovastatin and monacolins found in red yeast rice both lower the bad cholesterol LDL, and red yeast rice extract when used properly has also been known to improve the good cholesterol HDL. In fact it has been proven in clinical trials that red yeast rice works as well as or better than drugs meant to lower cholesterol.

As well as the benefits of red yeast rice, there are red yeast rice side effects to be aware of as in any new medicine or supplement. Some of these side effects are headaches, indigestion, bloating and gas, dizziness, heartburn, muscle and joint pain, liver inflammation and damage to peripheral nerves. There are also more serious but rare red rice yeast side effects to be aware of, particularly before you begin to take it. Rhabdomyolysis is the breakdown of muscle tissue and can lead to liver failure. It is always wise to discuss any new addition to your supplements with your family physician. Red yeast rice may also interfere with your body’s ability to produce CoQ10, a side effect of statin drugs. CoQ10 is produced in every cell in your body and is responsible for producing your body’s energy. People who are more prone by this side effect are persons over 50, people with diabetes and people who have or are at risk of heart failure or cardiomyopathy .
If you are considering taking red yeast rice supplements for your cholesterol levels, it is best to discuss this first with your doctor. Taking it in moderation initially is your best option, work up to the recommended dosage on the bottle and monitor yourself for red yeast rice side effects. If you experience severe red yeast rice side effects, stop taking it immediately and report it to your doctor and to the manufacturer as well.

Turmeric is a plant of the ginger family grown in temperatures ranging between 20 to 30 degrees celcius, typically in tropical South Asia where the turmeric health benefits have first been discovered. The part of the plants we get the spice we know as turmeric from are the rhizomes, which are sometimes used fresh, but mostly the rhizomes are boiled for several hours, dried in ovens, and then ground into the deep orange-yellow powder we are all familiar with.

As with many spices, turmeric has been known for centuries for its healing powers, and now in modern medicine is being studied extensively for different turmeric health benefits or side effects. According to the US National Institute of Health, there are currently 19 clinical trials to study the effects of culinary turmeric and curcumin (its active ingredient) for numerous clinical disorders. Among these disorders are Alzheimer’s Disease, cancer and arthritis. Lab tests have shown that turmeric has the ability to kill some types of cancer cells including the human leukemia cells. Speculation at this point in the studies is that it is possibly due to its antioxidant properties.

One of the popular turmeric health benefits is as an anti-inflammatory agent. By lowering histamine levels it helps keep inflammation in check for many disorders thus reducing joint pain. One possible turmeric benefits would be to help reduce the pain and inflammation of arthritis and there are ongoing studies to test its effects.

Another turmeric benefit is as an antibacterial. It is used as a topical antiseptic agent to help heal cuts, bruises and burns.

One of the first tumeric health benefits that was discovered was when it became typically associated in traditional Indian medicine as a digestive aid, combating the effects of digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and other disorders causing gastrointestinal discomfort. It was also used to aid ailments of the liver and has been shown in the lab to improve liver health when damaged by certain toxins, including alcohol, and to protect from further damage.

In Ayuverdic Medicine, a tradition style of medicine native to India, turmeric is used by the women to improve skin and hair, and is thought to have anti-aging benefits. They also use it as an antimicrobial and to rid themselves of excessive hair. Turmeric is also currently used in some sunscreen formulas.

When used in its raw form, another turmeric health benefits that will expose itself is it’s ability to strengthens cartilage and improves bone structure. Improved circulation is another health benefit to using turmeric. It contains antiplatelet properties which inhibit blood clots from forming, thus offering protection against heart attack and strokes.

With turmeric’s high concentration of antioxidants, it comes highly recommended when in need of combating free radicals, which makes it a definite consideration for your spice cabinet. Have some fun searching recipes in your cookbooks or online.
But as with any new addition to your diet or health regime, used in moderation it is mostly safe, however if you are taking supplements, it is always wise to discuss it with your doctor first. If you suffer from any of the following disorders or conditions, you should consult with your MD before using it in supplement form which might be the reason some people experience turmeric side effects.
• Congestive Heart disease with undetermined etiology
• Persons with gallstones, acute bilious colic, severe toxic liver disorders, obstructive jaundice
• Pregnant women or women who are nursing
• Persons with blood clotting disorders and are taking any kind of blood thinners
• If you take any other medications or have any other health issues

Turmeric is a safe herb and there are no known turmeric side effects, although if taking in large amounts you may experience some stomach upset. As it is not considered an essential nutrient, there is no “Recommended Daily Allowance” set, so it is best if you are taking supplements to follow the recommendations on the container.

Cinnamon, who doesn’t love it! And its versatility rivals that of any spice in your cabinet. A teaspoon of cinnamon added to almost any favorite dish can give it diversity and a whole new flavor. A pinch of cinnamon sprinkled on top of your favorite hot beverage, cocoa, hot chocolate, coffee etc.—Wow—what a pick-me-up! Sprinkle it on toast with a little sugar, but be careful—you’ll want more.

So why not indulge, you’ll be giving more than your taste buds a treat. In the medical and naturopath world, cinnamon is enjoying much popularity. There are studies being done globally to research the health benefits of cinnamon for more than the benefits we are already aware of.

Of course cinnamon health benefits are not new to many ancient eastern cultures. Dating back thousands of years, Egypt, China, India and Rome have all used cinnamon for healing. The ancient Romans used cinnamon to treat coughs and colds. The ancient Egyptians used it to embalm their bodies and also to dry and preserve meat. Dating back over 3 thousand years, the Chinese used cinnamon for colds, diarrhea and difficult menstruation. In India in Ayuveric Medicine, cinnamon was used to aid in digestion when added to tea and to treat diabetes, as well as flatulence, piles, Amenorrhea, Diarrhea, Toothache, Amoebiasis, Heart diseases, Fever, Cough, Cold, Headache and many more. These are just some of the benefits of cinnamon.

Cinnamon is commonly known for its antibacterial, anti fungal, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties, is high in antioxidants and has shown an amazing ability to treat yeast infections that resist traditional medications. As an antimicrobial, as the ancients knew, it helps deter the growth of bacteria in food and is being studied for its use as a food preservative.

Studies done in Sweden concluded that a small daily intake of cinnamon after 40 days lowered fasting blood glucose levels. In 2006, the American Diabetes Association suggested the use of cinnamon for diabetics to help lower blood sugar levels.

Results of other cinnamon health benefits studies include:

• Reduction of leukemia and lymphoma cancer cells and anti-melanoma activity.Relief of arthritic pain within one week of taking a half teaspoon of cinnamon combined with 1 teaspoon of honey every morning, and after one month, the ability to walk without symptoms of pain.
• The smell of cinnamon has the ability to boost memory and cognitive functioning
• Fights the E.coli bacteria found in unpasteurized juices
• ½ tsp. of cinnamon a day can reduce LDL cholesterol levels and triglycerides
• Aids in deterring unwanted clumping of blood platelets causing clots to form
• Inhibited the development of Alzheimers in mice

Often the foods we eat do not provide us with the nutrients we require so it is important to take into consideration what we can add to our foods to boost our consumption of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, etc. Cinnamon is a good source of manganese, iron and calcium and also supplies us with added fiber to our diet with only 11 calories per 2 teaspoons.

The active components of cinnamon which provide the cinnamon health benefits are not destroyed by heat, so cooking with it gives you just as much health benefit as using it uncooked.

One interesting development that for some might be a another one of the cinnamon health benefits is in its use to inhibit the urge for tobacco. The National Institute of Health has suggested chewing cinnamon sticks or cinnamon flavored toothpicks when trying to quit smoking. This method can also be used for over eaters trying to cut down on their urges to eat.

If you seldom bring the cinnamon out from your spice cabinet, you should seriously consider leaving it on the counter. Use it as often as you can and experiment with it in your food and drinks. Make it a permanent fixture on your kitchen table in a decorative container, and don’t ignore all the health benefits of cinnamon you are now aware of! Use it!
